March 25, 2007: Austin, Texas.

The nicest part of town is the university area, which sits on a small hill above downtown. The tower gives a commanding view of the entire city -surely the reason Charles Whitman chose the spot to do his sniping in '66.

The Congress St. Bridge leading into downtown is home to thousands of Mexican free-tail bats, which come streaming out as soon as the sun goes down to go insect hunting. Everyone gathers underneath to watch the nightly event.

The LBJ Library and Museum is great, but does its best to make the Vietnam debacle appear to be a minor slip-up in an otherwise great presidency.

Bats are a great example of Darwinian altruism. After going out for a night of blood sucking, if one bat doesn't get enough crimson juice, another bat helps the other by regurgitating blood into the hungry one's mouth. However, the likelihood of this increases if the hungry bat has previously helped the bat who is currently full. (This is called "tit for tat".)

Therefore, we need not look to a higher power for our altruistic tendencies.

By the way, I'm Shinhye. I've heard about YOU.

(And my username means "Owl's Nest" in the diminuitive form. Nocturnal. Comes out at night. But not from under a bridge, usually. And no fan club of Texans, alas.)

You guys missed South by South West by about two weeks. Bummer. Did you see the big Daniel Johnston mural?
